LiFePO4 batteries are lithium ion
batteries. The combination of lithium, iron and phosphate is significantly
safer than previous generations that used cobalt and manganese. Compared with AGM
lead acid batteries and gel batteries, their advantages and applications are as
follows:
High charge and discharge capacity –
unlike NiMH , NiCd and the lead-acid LiFePO 4 batteries allow normal
operation at discharge up to 90%. For comparison - other types of batteries
listed above do not recommend a discharge greater than 80%
A higher level of security. With the old
generations of lithium-ion technology, there is a high level of fire hazard and
the occurrence of an explosion on impact and damage to the outer shell of the
battery. The technology is much safer and no ignition or explosion was observed
in tests with several times higher charging current than the permissible one.
Long life cycle. The charge/discharge
cycles of lead-acid batteries are between 300 to 1000 cycles (depending on the
manufacturer and model). The life cycle of LiFePO 4 batteries is often
over 3000 cycles. Lead acid battery documentation usually states that the
batteries are serviceable and replaceable after 12 to 18 months, under normal
use one LiFePO 4 battery can last from 5 to 8 years. The batteries offered
by Deni Lighting EOOD have 5000+ charge/discharge cycles and a life of at least
5 years (according to manufacturer's catalog data)
High temperature resistance. In the case
of lithium cobalt and lithium manganese batteries, at temperatures above 200
degrees, irreversible changes in their structure occur. LiFePO4 _ the
technology withstands temperatures up to 500 degrees. It should be noted that
these are not normal working conditions. All batteries are electronically
limited in the range from -5 to +65 degrees (they do not allow charging to
begin at temperatures below -5 degrees and stop discharging at temperatures
above +65 degrees).
No memory effect. In normal operation,
batteries are never fully discharged. In case of incomplete discharge, the
so-called memory effect is expressed in the so-called offset to zero (0%),
thereby losing real capacity from the battery, which becomes unusable. At LiFePO
4 batteries this phenomenon is not observed, regardless of the cycles of
discharge and charge.
Weight - compared to LiFePO 4 lead acid
batteries batteries for the same power are about 2/3 less volume and 1/3
less weight.
Ecological. – as a subtype of Li-ion
batteries LiFePO 4 the batteries are SGS certified (without the content of
toxic metals), they also have a RoHS certificate. They are characterized as
non-toxic, non-polluting, made from affordable raw materials, competitive price
and long life
Frequently Asked Questions:
Can they be used as starter batteries -
NO, batteries of this type are not suitable for starting solutions. Starting
solutions draw a large current for a relatively short time, LiFePO 4 batteries
are designed to draw small currents for extended periods of time.
Can LiFePO 4 be used for electric car -
YES
Can LiFePO 4's be used for a boat
propeller - YES
How are they charged?. - charging with a
charger or charge controller is recommended designed especially for them.
In the absence of a suitable charger, it is permissible to use a charger for
lead-acid or AGM batteries, provided that two conditions are met:
that the charge voltage is within the permissible limits
Battery voltage | Charging voltage |
12V | 14V – 14.6V |
24V | 28V – 28.6V |
36V | 42V – 42.8V |
48V | 56V – 57.8V |
most of the chargers for lead-acid or AGM
batteries use the so-called " float charge option" - if possible,
this option should either be turned off or set to a low value (for 12 V battery,
float charge option at 12.6 V is acceptable)
Do they have a BMS (battery management
system) ? - All LiFePO 4 batteries offered by Deni Lighting Ltd. have a
BMS with short-circuit protection, overcharging and temperature control (does
not allow charging at battery temperatures below -5 degrees and does not allow
operation at temperatures above 65 degrees)
What is the self-discharge of the battery.
- with a charged battery at 100% self-discharge is up to 2% per month and up to
24% per year
Why at a higher price of LiFePO 4 claimed
to be more cost-effective than lead-acid or AGM batteries - looking only at the
final price LiFePO 4 are more expensive. What is compared is the cost per
cycle. With AGM batteries we have up to 1000 working cycles and with LiFePO 4 we
have 5000 cycles. The cost per cycle for AGM is exactly five times the cost of LiFePO
